In a statement, Universal and Focus Features revealed:
“The filmmakers of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”
This carefully crafted statement is deliberately vague and possibly disingenuous. The notion that the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ actor and his agents didn’t evaluate his schedule before accepting one of the most high profile film roles of the year is scarcely believable, so we can assume there were other reasons.
The Fifty Shades trilogy, which follow the erotic bondage adventures of Anastasia Steele and her billionaire lover Christian Grey, have sold over 70 million copies, and fans had been vocal about the casting of both Hunnam and the largely unknown Dakota Johnson.
The volume and intensity of the opprobrium from online forums may have been a factor in Hunnam’s departure, but so could the knowledge that there was a strong possibility the film would be a risible mess, despite the presence of director Sam Taylor-Wood.
It is only ten months until Fifty Shades of Grey is scheduled for release, so a replacement will have to be found soon. In the meantime, you will have to endure a series of painful bondage puns and cheap innuendoes in every article you read about Fifty Shades. So strap yourselves in and prepare for an ordeal.
