The traditional folk music of England has
contributed to several genres, such as sea shanties, jigs, hornpipes and dance
music. Some of the best known songs are Greensleeves,
Scarborough Fair, Pastime with Good Company, Over the Hills and Far Away
amongst others.
From the mid-16th century, nursery rhymes
began to be recorded in English plays. Some of the best known nursery rhymes
from Britain include; Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Roses are red, Jack
and Jill, Cock a doodle doo, Baa, Baa, Black Sheep, The Grand Old Duke of York,
etc.
